"Hampers are a great idea for women who don't really love flowers, but still want something bright and colourful on the day," she said. "Flowers are a great choice for people who aren't sure what to buy, because we can mix and match the flowers and add chocolates or balloons to make it a one of a kind bouquet. "The best part about the hampers is that THEY CAN} be tailored to suit any type of mum. "Mother's Day is one of our busiest times of the year, because everyone wants to buy their mum something bright and beautiful," Ms Davis said. Coffee machines were also a popular choice for Mother's Day gifts according to Hervey Bay Harvey Norman small appliances manager Sean Cattell, who said machines had been flying off the shelves in recent weeks. "A lot of people are looking for practical gifts as well as the bright bunches of flowers," Mr Cattell said. Ms Davis said while flowers were a popular gift choice for Mother's Day, other items such as soft toys, balloons and hampers were increasing in popularity. "It doesn't have to cost a fortune either; you can select up an amazing bouquet for about $30. Rowland Gwynne is not going to give his mother flowers on Mother's Day. "We take care of forty,000 rose bushes but our own garden is in a state of total disrepair," he laughs. Whatever the gift, Mrs Gwynne will have to wait for it, with the Gwynne's celebrating Mother's Day a week later than the rest of Australia. Customers were already lined up early this morning at the markets, where Rowland sold over 250 bunches in just a few hours. The flower shed is ablaze with colour from gerberas to chrysanthemums and of course, roses. While all flowers will look nice at the time, some will only last a day or two before wilting while fresher flowers will brighten the house for many days to come. "Customers come back after a week and tell us we have magic flowers," he says. "They're so impressed with how the flowers last. Look for flowers with tighter heads and fresh, bright stems for longer lasting blooms, he says. "But really your mum is going to like whatever you get her. The family business, Mary's Produce, supplies wholesalers as well as selling floral arrangements in the markets and will sell over 20,000 blooms and 30,000 stems of greenery this weekend. When you are a mother, now's the time to stop and smell the roses. All the different services -- Teleflora, FTD, 1-800-Flowers -- we stock their products that they're going to advertise, so we have so many cases of each one, and when we're out of them, we're out of them. The hardest thing is ordering flowers. But this year it might be worse, because there's two less shops (in the area). I would say it's a little cheaper, but not much. Oh yeah. Quite a bit. Yes. Normally we only have two designers and one driver. The amount of time it takes to prepare all the arrangements -- we're trying to help the kids so I had one girl for the last two weeks just prepping all the corsages and stuff. What I tell them is, you let the florist design it and just give me a price range and I'll work with it. But with two decades experience we know. Yes it does, but the worst thing in Flagler County for the last 15 years is the board of education having the prom the night of Mother's Day weekend. There's only so much you can handle. All we've got to do is add flowers now. It's nothing like it is for Valentine's Day. John Fasino talked shop with the News-Journal last week as the big day was approaching.
