Board Of Directors Of Florists For Change Inc. Designs The Organization's Long Term Strategy

The board of directors of Florists for Change Inc.

Membership Database - In the next few months, FFCI will create and promote a membership database which will be available to members for use in florist-to-florist orders.

A new "Supporter" category was created by the board for wholesalers and other industry providers who would like to assist FFCI in ways other than financially.

Four core values to be offered to members were established: Branding - FFCI members will be licensed to use a phrase which will show the public that they meet the standards outlined above. S.

The board created standards to define FFCI's florist members.

"FFCI considers the florist-to-florist exchange of same-day delivered orders an essential part of a healthy retail florist industry. Members will be able to use the wordmark on their websites, door stickers and other advertising and packaging materials.

Resource Center - FFCI's new website (coming soon!) will incorporate a resource center of helpful and informative links and documents, including: How to select a legal structure for your organisation How to read and understand financial information and improve your shop's margins and profits Best practices and new ideas Image library and tips on floral photography Order value matrix and analysis of delivery costs How to trademark and promote your shop's brand Templates to promote floral legislation against deceptive advertising in your state Blogs, links to webinars and articles from members and industry sources

Regional meetings over the next few months are being planned for Las Vegas, Nashville, San Jose and more. ". Patent and Trademark Office. A more limited version of that searchable database will be made available to the public on a branded website (using the trademarked phrase) to allow consumers to find traditional retail florists and place orders directly.

Advocacy - FFCI intends to be a united industry voice for traditional retail florists. The Board of Directors will meet again in Atlanta in January 2013, and an annual membership meeting will take place that summer.

Be smart when buying Father's Day gifts

Be smart when buying Father's Day gifts

A Moroccan American can advance claims that the luxury hotel where he works restricted him during a visit from Israeli diplomats, and then cut his hours when he complained, a federal judge ruled.

Supervisors allegedly said that "the Israeli delegation is very selective about who serves them," and that the hotel had to accommodate those desires.

A week later, the director of human resources told Arafi that the State Department had conducted background checks on the hotel's employees, and that these checks uncovered some "irregularities" with regard to a dozen employees, including Arafi, according to the complaint.

"Here, plaintiff alleges the defendant only scheduled him to work one day during the month that followed his discrimination complaints, whereas previously he had worked anywhere from five to seven days per week," the ruling states.

Arafi's claim of fewer tips from two restricted floors for the delegation's three-day say does not make the cut, Rothstein found.

While denial of money could constitute an adverse employment action, the potential tips were so small in this case that their deprivation can't rise to the level of an adverse employment actions, according to the ruling, which notes Arafi earned $133 in tips for the entire year of 2010.

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group moved to dismiss the lawsuit, which alleges disparate treatment and retaliation in violation of the federal Civil Rights Act and the District of Columbia's Human Rights Act.

For this claim to survive, it would have to show "a significant change in employment status, such as hiring, firing, failing to promote, reassignment with significantly different responsibilities, or a decision causing significant change in benefits," the decision states.

On the day of their arrival, a supervisor allegedly told workers who were either Arab or Muslim to prevent the floors where the delegates were staying. He identifies himself as a U. citizen born in Morocco who practices Islam. The supervisor allegedly told Arafi: "You know how the Israelis are with Arabs and Muslims.

Arafi's retaliation claim fared better. "Drawing all inferences in favor of plaintiff, the court determines that plaintiff has successfully alleged that he engaged in protected activity when he complained of discrimination, thereby satisfying the first aspect of the Title VII and DCHRA retaliation claims. Over the next month, however, Arafi says he was scheduled to only work one day a week asopposed to his normal schedule of five to seven days per week.

"Plaintiff's retaliation claim survives so long as he alleged facts that support that he made complaints to the hotel's management about what he perceived to be his supervisor's discriminatory behavior," Rothstein wrote. The delegation is a regular guest of the U. 10, 2010. , on Dec. State Department, and often stays at the hotel, he claims.

"Plaintiff's reduction in work schedule for a month would have reasonably been accompanied by a non-trivial reduction in pay," Rothstein added.

Leeds florists sniff out a scam

Leeds florists sniff out a scam

Police are investigating a string of break-ins at florists across Leeds amid fears the shops have become targets for credit card scammers.

"The thieves made a beeline for the office and the paperwork.

"We would never ask for credit card details in a photne call and I don't think many florists would, so people really need to be vigilant.

She said she knew of "seven or eight break-ins in the last few months" and believes an eastern European gang may be responsible, as one of her order pads was stolen by a well-dressed eastern European lady wearing a fur coat last year.

Police confirmed they were investigating a separate break-in at Anastasia Flowers, also in Chapel Allerton, on May 29, when thieves stole cash, a camera, a laptop and order books.

Lawnswood Floral Design was broken into on May 19, with thieves again taking the order books - and customers are still being targeted now.

Another florist, who didn't want to be named, said her shop was targeted by thieves who smashed up displays in a bid to find order books. ".

Across Leeds, dozens of people are believed to have fallen for the scam over the last few weeks, with one victim - a vicar - losing more than £10,000.

"I know a lot of other florists have been targeted this way.

Michelle said: "It seems strange that so many florists have been affected.

Owner Michelle Lancashire said 11 clients had given their details to a man claiming to be 'Jonathan from the accounts department', many of whom were vulnerable pensioners.

"They're handing their details over because it sounds so convincing.

Carole Taylor, who runs the shop with her partner Robin Clipsham, said several customers had since received phone calls asking for their credit card details.

Some customers fell for the scam - but were alerted by their banks when fraudsters tried to take payments for amounts ranging from £1,000 to £5,000.

Carole, who has owned the Harrogate Road shop with Robin for two years, said: "It's absolutely disgusting.

A police spokesman said they would be "looking at any similarities" as part of their enquiries and warned people to be vigilant with their bank and credit card details.

You're a day late! Amy Childs' boyfriend David Peters arrives at her house

You're a day late! Amy Childs' boyfriend David Peters arrives at her house

She celebrated her 22nd birthday on Thursday but it seems that Amy Childs wasn't spoiled until yesterday.

Apparently the couple first met when they worked together on one of Amy's magazine shoots and when they recently bumped into each other again, they exchanged numbers and have been in contact since.

Among the presents - which were inside a bright pink gift bag - was a Victoria's Secret shopping bag which no doubt contained some new underwear for Amy.

A source at the hotel they were staying at last month told the Daily Star, 'They seemed pretty loved up.

No doubt trying to make up for his lateness, David Peters chose the cheesiest gifts he could find including a giant teddy bear, flowers and bottles of champagne.

Some women would think this is just typical of a man, but Amy was clearly impressed with her presents as she was seen beaming when she opened her front door.

The Take Me Out hunk was showing off his muscly body in a tight blue T-shirt which he wore with jeans and boat shoes.

The former TOWIE star was seen with a huge bouquet of flowers and a huge smile on her face as she looked out at David who was retrieving any thing from his silver vehicle.

It is not certain how long the couple have been dating one another but they were first spotted out and about together in Liverpool last month, where they very much looked like an item.

'They didn't care that they were seen together in the room on Friday night but next morning they came down separately, I guess to try to hide what they'd been up to.

A SCENT-SATIONAL young florist from Tetbury has scooped a blooming marvellous award at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.

"It's an amazing feeling - I can't believe it," she said.

Hannah, who works at Scentiments florists in Tetbury, and is studying a Floristry level three City and Guilds qualification at City of Bath College, said she was very happy to have received the award.

Juliet Dunlop: It's a real and present danger, buying gifts

Juliet Dunlop: It's a real and present danger, buying gifts

GIFT-GIVING is a minefield.

But the point he makes about excess, about it all just looking and feeling too much, is an interesting one.

Just ask unlikely parenting guru Sir Elton John. You make a list, usually a long one at Christmas, and the rest of the year just keep asking and asking. And he's not the first rich man, or father come to that, to worry about spoiling his kids.

Last year ONS asked 80,000 people four questions - how satisfied they were with their lives, to what extent their lives were worthwhile, how happy they were the day before they completed the survey, and how anxious they felt. Three-quarters of those asked gave themselves seven out of ten on a scale of well-being. He described the deluge of gifts from well-wishers as touching but "obscene" and said he'd given most of them away to schools and hospitals.

Now Sir Elton, who is worth an estimated £220 million, is known for his love of the high life.

It seems, therefore, that we are not all raving materialists. He said he wasn't comfortable being "all showy" when so many people were struggling to make ends meet.

Yes, things have moved on in the gifts and toy department and friends tell me it's hard to say no when the motorised ride-on car they really, really want is something you too would have loved as a child.

Politeness, guilt or just a general sense that you'd rather buy it yourself, are the usual barriers. " .

Things are far easier when you're a child.

The under-16s also put playing with friends and spending time with family right at the top of their list.

So, if ripping open a few presents every now and then isn't the answer, what does make us happy? Well, for the past couple of years the UK government has published the results of a national happiness survey, conducted by the Office for National Statistics.

A fine balance must be struck. Go the other way and you simply cause embarrassment.

Maybe it was a present he didn't really want.

Juliet Dunlop: It's a real and present danger, buying gifts

Five not-so-hot Father's Day gifts and what to buy instead

Five not-so-hot Father's Day gifts and what to buy instead

Mothers are showered with flowers and other presents on their day in May but when June rolls around all Dad gets is a gift card or a garish tie. The shower feel was very good and the showerhead was easy to adjust. It was very good, but not excellent, at delivering hot water from the showerhead to your body and our testers found the force, coverage and droplet size wanting, earning it a score of 55. Let Dad luxuriate under the spray of the Moen Inspire 21777, $50, which has seven different shower functions, ranging from rain shower to massage, and delivers hot water where you want it. But it was very good at indirect cooking. Instead. This Char-Broil was excellent at low-temperature performance and very good at high-temperature evenness and indirect cooking. To avoid getting Dad a second-rate gift, choose one that's tops in Consumer Reports' tests.

Grilling Dad There are several Char-Broils in the labs at Consumer Reports but two in particular differed widely in performance. It scored a 72 and is a CR Best Buy. It was also poor at such tasks as pureeing soup and grating cheese. The Ninja Master Prep Professional QB1004, $60 and a CR Best Buy, is a warrior in the kitchen with a score of 73. It was only fair at making icy drinks and mediocre at crushing ice plus it made a lot of racket.

Handyman Dad Buying your father a subpar cordless tool kit that doesn't maintain a charge certainly will not encourage him to tackle his "Honey Do" list. But the NST1024 has the edge on edging.

Foodie Dad Does your father like making icy drinks when he entertains in the summer? If so, avoid the Wolfgang Puck WPBLFP50 (HSN) blender, $90. It slayed both the icy drink and crushing ice tests and is very durable. This set, which comes with an 18-volt, nickel-cadium battery scored only a 44 in our cordless tool kit tests. On the plus side the straight-shaft model 18-volt trimmer handled well. We do recommend two of its brandmates, the 24-volt Black saw were very good and all had excellent runtimes. The Char-Broil Classic 463211512 (Home Depot), $200, has features similar to its brandmate (four main burners, a side burner, electronic ignitor and coated-steel grates) but it outperformed the other with a score of 75, earning it a CR Best Buy.

What Are the best Items to Buy in June?

What Are the best Items to Buy in June?

June promises lazy days, getaways, fresh berries, barbecues and bushels of juicy peaches.

Look for price cuts of 40% to 70% off the original prices, he says.

Want to get the best buys on June travel? Swim against the tide.

"If you want great travel deals, you have to approach it as a contrarian traveler," says Peter Greenberg, author of Michelin's "Like a Local" travel book series and founder of PeterGreenberg.

If you have a craving for juicy summer fruit, you are in luck.

June "really signals the start of the summer harvest," says James Parker, facility team leader for the global produce buying office of Whole Foods Market.

Look for great buys on peaches, plums, apricots and cherries, he says.

If your team or favorite player are going through some type of upheaval, you will receive a good buy on that merchandise, Wertheim says. So while Brooklyn Nets gear is at full price, "New Jersey apparel is on deep discount," he says. "And this summer is no different.

One venue for bargains this month: South Florida, Greenberg says.

Sure, it's warmer than in the winter and spring.

Prices are falling on corn, zucchini, summer squash and peppers, says James Parker, facility team leader for the global produce buying office of Whole Foods Market.

Often these items are grown locally or regionally on smaller farms, which means lower shipping costs -- plus less time from field to table.

Here are about a dozen items on which you ought to see some healthy deals and discounts this month.

Depending on what you require, you could find some bargains in June on sports equipment and workout gear.

"You can probably get some good bargains on camping equipment, certainly on baseball equipment," says Jon Wertheim, senior writer for Sports Illustrated and co-author of "Scorecasting: The Hidden Influence Behind How Sports Are Played and Games Are Won.

Berries are another good buy in June. In June, 4 pounds for $6 or $7 "is not unusual," he says. "Ounce for ounce, you're paying a lot less in June than the rest of the year.

Also hitting the stores this month are exotic varieties of traditional summer fruit -- like apriums and pluots (both hybrids of apricots and plums), and white peaches.

Savvy shoppers can find discounts of 10% to 20 % on garden plants, Caggiano says.

Father's Day is June 17, even so, you do not need to buy Dad a discount tie to show him that you know the valuation of a dollar.

A lot of items that often double as dad-type gifts will be promoted and marked down during the days and weeks leading up to Father's Day, says Daniel Butler, vice president of retail operations with the National Retail Federation.

Flower lovers will find the "best bargains" on bunches they pick up themselves.

Or, for a real price cut, pick up roses in "market batches" (just the flowers, wrapped in paper or cellophane). Shop carefully and you can find rooms at top-of-the-line hotels and resorts for 40% to 80 % off, he says.

Also in June, "gardening is in full swing in most climates," she says.

Depending on where you live, you could see prices drop below $1 per pound for both conventional and organic summer vegetables, he says.

Another go-against-the-flow destination in June: the desert. ) And while it's technically the rainy season, that often means just a short afternoon shower, Greenberg says. In return, you can get pleasure from some great off-season prices, along with "no lines and much better service," he says.

"We are already seeing some golf equipment being marked down," he says.

That means you can often get 20 percent to 40% off on items such as barbecue grills and grilling utensils, tools, outdoor supplies and equipment, and personal careitems such as shavers and cologne, he says.

For the rest of the family, casual warm-weather clothes are getting their deepest discounts yet, Butler says.

Remember those tanks, T-shirts and shorts that appeared in the stores just as spring was on the horizon? Retailers want to move them out of the stores by the end of July, so expect some deep discounts starting in mid-June, he says.

No flowers, no gifts, no balloons: CMS rolls out new graduation rules

No flowers, no gifts, no balloons: CMS rolls out new graduation rules

To prepare for graduation ceremonies happening across Charlotte this weekend, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools released a list of rules for family and friends attending the ceremonies.

In South Carolina, one mother was handcuffed for cheering during her daughter's graduation.

Parents in Pitt County were forced to sign a pledge that said guests would be asked to leave if they don't control their yelling and noise making during graduation exercises.

Guests will be checked with a metal detector before entering the venue, CMS officials said.

CMS is also asking guests to keep cheering to a minimum.

"I cannot applaud her, letting her know, 'Yes, I'm so proud of you,' like all of the other years when people graduate? How can I not cheer for my child?" asked Shannon Cooper.

The mother stayed in a Florence jail for several hours before paying a $225 bail.

While many parents and family members will be upset by the rules, other school districts in the Carolinas are taking those rules a step further this year.

She was charged with disorderly conduct.

Creative covers for containers make easy gifts

The "holiday season" may fall in December, but between graduations, weddings, Father's Day and the like, you're hardly off the hook for gift giving this time of year. Once it's dry, you can write on the surface, either to label the future contents or just to scribble a message for the recipient. This collection of decorative yet useful items can be easily customized for different recipients, from dads to grads, teachers to brides.

These are ideal for couples, especially if you "carve" their initials into the bark.

For teachers, consider giving glass containers a modern twist on that old classroom standby ---- the chalkboard.

While I'm lucky enough to live in New Hampshire, where the white birch is the official state tree, and there's easy accessibility to bark from fallen branches and limbs, there are online retailers who sell the bark in sheets and tubes as well. If not, cut a flat piece of bark so it's large enough to wrap around the container with a bit of overlap and hot glue the ends together (a rubber band helps hold the bark in place until the glue dries).

The simplest idea is also the most elegant ---- wrap bottles or jars with white birch bark and turn them into rustic vases or candle holders. For example, a congratulatory note on a vase of flowers or a "Thanks for a great year!" message for a teacher.

FACES: Larimore, ND, couple purchase local flower shop

For Amy and Larry Cronin, it was baptism by flower when they became Larimore business owners this spring. The message can be a standard greeting, or it can be personalized.

Larry discovered floral arranging is something he enjoys.

"It's fun. com website, they have shipped the imprinted flowers, mostly roses, to customers across the United States, including the Texas, Pennsylvania and California. You start out with ingredients . I got my start (creating) in the restaurant business with food.

Although being thrown into the business in the midst of its busiest season has been hectic, the Cronins are enjoying it.

Now, they also market their imprinted flowers from the Larimore flower shop.

"It's a lot easier to market in the four walls," Larry said.

"We've done baseballs, and we've done hockey pucks," Larry said.

When the couple learned that Larimore Flower and Gift was for sale, he and Amy decided to buy it and run it in addition to their Speaking Roses business.

Joleen also taught Larry to make flower arrangements, staying on to work in the shop for a couple of months after she sold the business.

"The greenhouse is where they've had the most fun," Amy said, adding that Hailey and Riley created containers for Memorial Day.

The flower shop is a good fit with the "Speaking Roses from the Heart" business the Cronins started in 2009, where they imprint messages on live, wood and silk flowers.

Larry, a 20-veteran of the restaurant industry, was researching online for something different to do when he learned about Speaking Roses from the Heart International.

"I always liked something different, a challenge," he said.

Besides managing the Speaking Roses business, the flower shop and greenhouse, the Cronins rent tuxedos and operate Larimore Lodging.

"There's enough for me never to get bored," Larry said.

"They've been great support," Amy said.

Cayading: How to start a floristry business

FIRST, let me discuss with you what Floristry is all about. You must learn to expand your network and look for the very best supplies of flowers with the most competitive price to choose from.

You must learn also the cultural meaning of colors for it will strongly affect the choice and use of flowers. The vastly divergent views on the color white can also lead to major flower issues.

Such differences can lead to difficult issues when a bouquet of white lilies, for example, is delivered.

One thing you ought to do if you put up your own flower shop, create and invest your own brand by making your shop look so attractive bearing your name and logo. While white represents death in many Asian cultures, it is simultaneously a symbol of purity and innocence in many European and American cultures.

Floristry business is one of the most promising businesses today for it has a great demand outside for flowers expresses a thousand words.

Establishing a flower shop business will also demand a lot of care due to the its nature - quick loss by spoilage.

If only you have enough starting capital, you need to use updated merchandising tool like a floral refrigerator where you'll never display your flowers but also keeps the flowers fresh for a longer period of time. To some, a flower such as a red rose might mean love, but to others it might be considered indecent or simply puzzling. The holidays and events for which flowers are used vary.

Considering all these things, as an entrepreneur, you must know the types and quantity of flowers to stock.

Find a suitable location for your floristry shop.

You will also be saving rather than losing due to less spoilage. Centerpieces, entryways, reception tables, bridal bouquets, wedding canopy and stage sets are only a few examples of how flowers are used in the business and social event settings. Here are some tips for those who aspire to start their own floristry shops.

Before you will commence this kind of business, as an entrepreneur you must have the passion for flowers and flower decoration is only one of the requirements. It encompasses flower care and handling, floral design or flower arranging, merchandising, and display and flower delivery. Retail florists offer fresh flowers and related products and services to consumers.

Clever covers make gifts stand out

Clever covers make gifts stand out

The "holiday season" may fall in December, but between graduations, weddings, Father's Day and the like, you're hardly off the hook for gift-giving this time of year.

These are perfect for couples, especially if you "carve" their initials into the bark.

While I'm lucky enough to live in New Hampshire, where the white birch is the official state tree, and there's easy accessibility to bark from fallen branches and limbs, there are online retailers who sell the bark in sheets and tubes.

If you're lucky enough to have an intact, tube-shaped piece of bark, just slip it over the container.

Measuring tape

Instructions:

Measure the height and circumference of the can.

For teachers, consider giving glass containers a modern twist on that old classroom standby the chalkboard.

Use painters' tape to mask off any sections of bottles and jars you would like to remain transparent, then apply several coats of chalkboard spray paint.

Turn the tube right side out and slide it over the can (it will be snug), with the main color toward the bottom.

Cut a strip of your main-color felt that measures fifty percent an inch longer than the circumference and 1 1/2 inches shorter than the height.

At this point, you will have a long tube that extends above the top of the can.

Fold the rectangle in 50%, right sides together, and, matching up the seams, sew along the raw edges, creating a tube of fabric.

And speaking of teachers, why not help them organize their desks with a set of stylish, felt-covered accessories? Dads with desk jobs also would appreciate these, and they'll never guess that these modern, color-blocked containers started out as tuna fish, soup and tomato cans!

Materials:

About 1/4 yard felt in two colors, a main color and a contrasting color that will become a band around the exterior of the container and the lining. ).

Press (use a press cloth if you're using acrylic felt to avoid scorching/melting it) the seam allowance open. For example, a congratulatory note on a vase of flowers or a "Thanks for a great year!" message for a teacher.

Assorted recycled cans, washed well and labels removed

Sewing supplies: sewing machine, scissors, pins, etc. This collection of decorative yet useful items can be easily customized for different recipients, from dads to grads, teachers to brides.

Sew the two strips together along one of the long sides.

Cut a strip of the contrast-color felt half an inch longer than the circumference and 2 inches taller than the height.

Something Special on Main

Something Special on Main

Five years ago, Grant Lorick and his business partner David Withers never would have dreamed of moving their flower shop to Columbia's Main Street.

Next door to Something Special, owners recently finished sprucing up the outside of the building with new windows and awnings and are getting close to signing a lease with a new tenant, said Frank Cason, a commercial real estate agent with Colliers International, who is working on the deal. He said he has had interest from a multitude of retailers, restaurants and office tenants.

"Since we opened, the foot traffic has just been nonstop," Lorick said.

Lorick was skeptical at first.

But the first floor and basement combined would give them 3,500 square feet, including storage - a luxury Lorick never had. It has given them a central location, which has opened up delivery routes in Northeast Richland and meant quicker trips to supply to hospital rooms and set up for downtown events. And the location - in the midst of Columbia's bustling business district - has set them up to make use of an emerging post-recession comeback in corporate party planning.

Prioreschi, who sold the building to the florists, said it brings, well, something special to the corridor. Andrews Road, catering weddings and other events, in addition to delivering floral arrangements to hospitals and homes.

They had been looking for a couple of years for a building to buy that would give them more space than the 1,400 square feet with no storage that they were working in.

One Saturday last year, the two were driving down Main Street after setting up arrangements at a wedding at the Marriott when they saw a for sale sign on the building near the corner of Main and Taylor streets.

"One piece at a time, it gets better and better and better," said developer Tom Prioreschi, who has built most of the condos and apartments on Main Street.

"Your eyes start opening up to the possibilities," he said. I didn't know what to expect.

Today, the owners of Something Special Florist have been open about three weeks and are preparing for next week's grand opening celebration of their new, ornately decorated space on Main Street between Hampton and Taylor streets. He predicted that in two years, the street will look dramatically different and in five years, "you won't even recognize it. " Lorick said he feels lucky to have gotten in on the beginning of the revitalization. For 14 years, Lorick and Withers have run the shop on St.
