They announced they will begin a search for workers of production line, salesmen, locksmiths, sewers and truck drivers. When talking about difficulties while finding workers, employers pointed out a lack of candidates of desired profession , lack of work experience and lack of interest among potential workers. Gift ideas for Mother's Day
FLORISTS across the Fraser Coast are preparing for a busy weekend, with thousands of families across the region ordering flowers for Mother's Day. "Hampers are a great idea for women who don't really love flowers, but still want something bright and colourful on the day," she said. "Flowers are a great choice for people who aren't sure what to buy, because we can mix and match the flowers and add chocolates or balloons to make it a one of a kind bouquet. "The best part about the hampers is that THEY CAN} be tailored to suit any type of mum. "Mother's Day is one of our busiest times of the year, because everyone wants to buy their mum something bright and beautiful," Ms Davis said. Coffee machines were also a popular choice for Mother's Day gifts according to Hervey Bay Harvey Norman small appliances manager Sean Cattell, who said machines had been flying off the shelves in recent weeks. "A lot of people are looking for practical gifts as well as the bright bunches of flowers," Mr Cattell said. Ms Davis said while flowers were a popular gift choice for Mother's Day, other items such as soft toys, balloons and hampers were increasing in popularity. "It doesn't have to cost a fortune either; you can select up an amazing bouquet for about $30. "At the moment coffee machines and food processors have been extremely popular gift choices, as well as other kitchen wear items. |
Spare a thought for florists on Mother's Day
Spare a thought for florists on Mother's Day
Rowland Gwynne is not going to give his mother flowers on Mother's Day. "We take care of forty,000 rose bushes but our own garden is in a state of total disrepair," he laughs. Whatever the gift, Mrs Gwynne will have to wait for it, with the Gwynne's celebrating Mother's Day a week later than the rest of Australia. Customers were already lined up early this morning at the markets, where Rowland sold over 250 bunches in just a few hours. However it is at the farm, which surrounds the Gwynne's Roleystone home, that work really gets underway with wholesaler's vans rolling up to collect thousands of flowers as they are picked, graded and bundled to be taken to florists and retailers. The flower shed is ablaze with colour from gerberas to chrysanthemums and of course, roses. While all flowers will look nice at the time, some will only last a day or two before wilting while fresher flowers will brighten the house for many days to come. "Customers come back after a week and tell us we have magic flowers," he says. "They're so impressed with how the flowers last. Look for flowers with tighter heads and fresh, bright stems for longer lasting blooms, he says. "But really your mum is going to like whatever you get her. The family business, Mary's Produce, supplies wholesalers as well as selling floral arrangements in the markets and will sell over 20,000 blooms and 30,000 stems of greenery this weekend. It's a hazard that comes with the job, with Valentine's Day celebrations postponed for similar reasons. Nor does of having bouquets of roses at his disposal prove much of an advantage as Rowland who admits he frequently forgets to take flowers to dinner parties and occasions that call for them. "The secret to buying a florist flowers is buying her favourites", says |

Getting the job done: Florist John Fasino
Getting the job done: Florist John Fasino
When you are a mother, now's the time to stop and smell the roses. All the different services -- Teleflora, FTD, 1-800-Flowers -- we stock their products that they're going to advertise, so we have so many cases of each one, and when we're out of them, we're out of them. The hardest thing is ordering flowers. But this year it might be worse, because there's two less shops (in the area). I would say it's a little cheaper, but not much. Oh yeah. Quite a bit. Yes. Normally we only have two designers and one driver. The amount of time it takes to prepare all the arrangements -- we're trying to help the kids so I had one girl for the last two weeks just prepping all the corsages and stuff. What I tell them is, you let the florist design it and just give me a price range and I'll work with it. But with two decades experience we know. Yes it does, but the worst thing in Flagler County for the last 15 years is the board of education having the prom the night of Mother's Day weekend. There's only so much you can handle. All we've got to do is add flowers now. It's nothing like it is for Valentine's Day. John Fasino talked shop with the News-Journal last week as the big day was approaching. And everyone's mother moves to Florida. We do a lot of preparation. All different arrangements have different flowers. |

Florists question an old arrangement
Florists question an old arrangement
About a week before Mother's Day, one of the busiest holidays for florists, a Google advertisement for George's Flowers in Roanoke read: "Real Local Roanoke Florist. But the cost structure used by the flower services can be a disadvantage for florists, and the relaying of orders from customer to flower service to florist presents opportunities for blunders for which local florists are blamed, several florists said. Competition from the large flower services is not all that is troubling the industry. Florists were hit by the recession, leading to some closures, said Jennifer Sparks, vice president of marketing for the Society of American Florists. While those challenges have affected the overall number of retail florists, they have also encouraged positive change, Sparks said: Florists are finding their niche and learning to be more efficient. Teleflora, then the Telegraph Delivery Service, started in 1934 as a means to connect florists across the country. In 1958 the company changed its name to Teleflora. Without those benefits, the retail floral industry would be in worse shape, he said. "The florists are the lifeblood of our industry," Apatoff said. Without that it would be a much tougher road for them. Several florists provided an example of how the cost structure typically works: A florist in North Carolina who takes an order for a $100 arrangement to be delivered in Roanoke gets $20 for taking the order. 9 million the same period last year. The companies declined to reveal their cost structure. "We follow an industry model for pricing," Apatoff said. Last year a group of 30 florists formed Florists for Change, a nonprofit with plans to start a marketing campaign that will educate consumers about the problems florists face and encourage consumers to shop locally. The organization also has sent a proposal to a number of the flower service companies asking them to amend their cost structure, said Dirk Lorenz, a florist in Fremont, Calif. In the meantime, some of Florists for Change's 200 members are turning to each other to fulfill orders across the country. The organization hopes its efforts will enhance the industry. "As time has gone on and more and more of these non-brick-and-mortar retailers are gathering orders, we've seen more and more florists go out of business," Lorenz said. The companies act as a go-between for florists taking orders to be delivered in different cities, states and countries. The business model is clearly a success for the flower services. FTD also reported increased earnings for the quarter that ended March 31. Locally, at least one florist also is trying to educate consumers. Blumen Haus-Dove Florist in Roanoke has a page on its website urging customers to use local florists and avoid national online or phone ordering services. Teleflora also has launched a "Save the Florists" campaign to educate consumers about "drop shipping," or ordering flowers from a service that bypasses florists and ships flowers in a box. "Teleflora is dedicated to making florists successful," spokeswoman Missy Miller said. FTD said it also supports florists by providing them with marketing and software. "We spend a tremendous amount of money on marketing and technology that they couldn't afford otherwise," Apatoff said. "Local florists, we all work extremely hard to supply good customer service and a quality product," Blumen Haus manager Cindy Rice said. The floral shop still works with all of the flower services, Rice said. "The best thing these companies do is process the credit card. Mixed bouquet The plight of the floral industry has prompted positive changes which will help florists sustain their businesses, said Sparks, of the Society of American Florists. For instance, included in the coupons that were part of the May 6 Roanoke Times was a two-page advertisement for Teleflora that listed the Roanoke-area flower shops it works with. Debbie Haynes, who formerly operated Twig and Berry floral shop in Roanoke, decided to refocus her business by relocating to Salem and sharing a Main Street space with a wedding gown consignment store and a stationery business. "I just felt like we needed a different way to make it work," Haynes said. The floral shop is now called the Flower Shoppe on Main. Some florists, such as Clements, also point out that they are in competition with the large flower services for orders, because the services keep a larger share of the profit on orders that come in via the Internet or telephone, as compared to those placed with a florist who transmits the order. Ruth Valentine of Fallon Florist in Roanoke sees those benefits. Her shop uses FTD, and Valentine has noticed it gives her business an opportunity to reach new customers who have been the recipients of her work. "It happens enough to know that it's not just a flukey sort of thing," she said. Florists for Change Some florists are beginning to push back. Clements, of George's Flowers, decided three years ago to stop working with the large flower services. He worries that issues with late deliveries and wrong orders are tarnishing the industry. The large flower services say they support florists by creating sales for local shops through marketing and merchandising. "We really try to be partners with our florists and champion their business," FTD president Rob Apatoff said. Some florists agree, saying that working alongside the flower services gives them a chance to reach new customers. Reynolds said her group's members are increasingly turning to each other to fulfill orders within the state. "A lot of people go store to store to prevent the wire service fees," she said. She also encourages consumers to use the Internet to find a florist in the city where they need flowers delivered and work directly with that florist. |

Mom's Day means flowers
There's something about Mother's Day and flowers that just naturally seems to go together. "It's busy without being too hectic," she said. With Valentine's Day, they want it on the 14th. Really and truly it makes their day. We have great drivers and they know when they come to this holiday they need to be on their toes. Bilger ranks Mother's Day next to Valentine's Day as her business' busiest time. "Traditionally Mother's Day was one of the busiest for florists and flower delivery, but it's not as intense as Valentine's Day," said Wes DeLong, owner of Enterline's. Bilger said those who order flowers on Mother's Day generally ask for the same type of bouquet. Bilger said her employees are a crucial part of making Mother's Day weekend a success. "They are obviously a very important part of the business," she said. "Younger people give us a call and have the website up on their computer," said DeLong. Long-time customers from around the country still call to have flowers supplied by Enterline's throughout the area as well, said DeLong. It helps them to feel good too, that they're helping to spread some happiness. Enterline's Flowers, Milton, has been delivering Mother's Day arrangements since Wednesday. "Really, and truly, our drivers report when they offer the flowers how happy the recipients are," Bilger said. "Mother's Day is very big for that reason, maybe because they can't visit mom, they send the flowers," Bilger said. Hits for Mother's Day include hanging baskets and potted plants, though fresh-cut arrangements are still quite popular, according to DeLong. "We still do more fresh-cut than anything," he said. "Most people say to us, 'just do a nice mixed spring arrangement,'" she said. They like a nice, big full-mixed bouquet. Bilger also noted that a number of orders are received, both online and via phone, from individuals from out of the area sending flowers locally to mothers. (Mother's Day) is a little bit more relaxed. |

Area Florists Gearing up for Mother's Day
Area Florists Gearing up for Mother's Day "Yeah, it's crazy," said Randy Verhasselt, owner of Evolutions in Design. "The roses are great for moms, wives, girlfriends, maybe for that neighbor that did a favor and you would like to say thank you," said Ann Dahlke, a volunteer for the conservatory. Fresh flowers are the most popular purchase, garden plants are a close second, but no matter what they're selling, their clients are very happy to be buying. The sale is one of the main fundraisers for their scholarship program which helps children and adults pursue instrument and voice lessons. They expect to sell about 900 dozen roses between Friday and Saturday. "Weeks of preparation, our alley is full of plants, we have plants all over the store," said Verhasselt. This weekend, they expect to do as much business as they do during the entire month of January. "The nice thing about Mother's Day is, everybody's happy about sending something to mom. "We give away 255 scholarships annually totalling over $50,000," said Dahlke. The store has extra staff on hand and employees are working late to handle all of their orders. Did you buy your mom a gift? Here are 5 last
Outside of Valentine's Day, most florists will tell you the other popular flower-giving holiday is Mother's Day. With only a few days from Mother's Day, are you finding yourself scrambling to find that special mother in your life a meaningful last-minute gift? Whether your mother likes technical gadgets or something simpler such as a bouquet of flowers or candy, there is something for everybody. Adams stresses that they keep arrangements on hand for last-minute gift-buyers, but if you call ahead you have a better selection. Does your mom or the mother of your children like to read? If so, an e-reader would make sense. With items like the Kindle (now selling for less than $100) and some knock-off brands selling for less than $50, these gadgets have become an affordable item for many. Don't know which kind to buy? The Terrebonne Parish Library System has a collection of thousands of e-books that you can check-out on the website, www. org. Similar to eReaders, digital photo frames have gone through a price modification. They might be able to offer you another suggestion that will make mom smile just as big. Angela Adams, owner of Blooming Orchid Florist in Houma, said it's not uncommon to see business ramp up until Mother's Day |
Mother's Day Gift Orders Pouring In
Mother's Day Gift Orders Pouring In
Mother's Day is this Sunday and some businesses in the Poconos are starting to get swamped with gift orders. "It makes you feel good when you receive flowers," said Santina Zayas of East Stroudsburg, who hopes she's getting flowers for Mother's Day. The shop is even open this Sunday, a day they are normally closed for business. At Pure Day Spa in Downtown Stroudsburg, workers said they are getting a lot of calls for Mother's Day gifts. "Lots of calls for arrangements, loose bouquets, presentation bouquets, a selection," said Alexis Batista of The Floral Boutique. "Oh my god, because we work so hard with the kids we require a day out at the spa, relaxing, no kids, no whining, no anything," said Priscilla Quiles of East Stroudsburg. When you are confused as to what mom really wants, Pure Day Spa has a few ideas. "It's so relaxing. While flowers are a great gift for mom, some mothers who spoke to Newswatch 16 said they prefer a quiet, relaxing day away. "A lot of spa packages, a lot of massages, you can pick companion massages, dad and mom, or mom and daughter massages," said Amber Johnson of Pure Day Spa. Workers there said they are ready for one of their biggest holidays of the year. "We're used to it. Of course, there are other options as well. |

Here's a list of gifts NOT to give mom
For most it is the greatest gift in the world: motherhood. Car air fresheners, lint rollers and other 24-hour convenience store gifts. Diet books and gym memberships. Mother's Day don'ts: dish gloves, Cougar shirts
Mother's Day don'ts: dish gloves, Cougar shirts What were they thinking? Through plastic smiles or gritted teeth, moms have to suck it up sometimes when Mother's Day means a gifted toilet, unsolicited wash tub or anti-aging cream. "That was the only present I ever received from him for Mother's Day," said Largent, in Gaffney, S. "After that I told him that I didn't want anything. But unrequested sex toys? A chainsaw?. A rabbit might be better than what a good chunk of moms surveyed in March by the website Cafemom received last year - absolutely nothing. So do unrequested sex toys, guys. Glenna Tooman's uh-oh moment was when her now-grown son, Bill, was 10 or 11. Other, er, unusual items to make the worst-gift list at Cafemom: a Cuban cigar and stale candy left over from Easter. "He spent his allowance money on it. We named him Garfunkel. We had him for years. , might be the exception to that rule. She accepted a toilet in 2010, when there was no money for romantic extras for her first Mother's Day. "That's what we needed at the time," she said grimly. Big boxes aside, moms surveyed by the site PlumDistrict said they'd choose handmade gifts over store-bought ones. In potentially difficult news for any eager gift-giver now scratching the chainsaw off his list, the surveyed moms also agreed they'd rather not have to be in on buying their own Mother's Day gift. Judith Schmelzinger in Hamburg, N. Said her mom, Bev Cundle, in Leeds: "What can I say? How does a mother smile through gritted teeth. Nancy Nolan recalls a useless but memorable gift forty years ago, when her husband took their then 6-year-old son shopping for a Mother's Day gift and returned with a jar of cream to fade age spots. She was only 28. "I just hugged him and thanked him for the wonderful gift," she said, "and he just beamed. " In San Francisco, Heddi Cundle joked that her mother back home in England hasn't quite forgiven her for a particular Mother's Day gift: A plastic wash tub with dish gloves and a scrub brush, all from the dollar store. "I was very surprised. Becky Jackson has no use for fussy spas, flowers or jewelry. How do you make it disappear?". |

Plastic flowers for Mother's Day? Say it is not so
Plastic flowers for Mother's Day? Say it is not so
Yet that's precisely what it sounded like Freidberg, a Dartmouth College professor of geography, was advocating on American Public Media's "Marketplace" radio program last week.
And she said figuring out the best purchase in any given situation isn't just about a particular product's "carbon footprint," a measure of carbon dioxide emissions.
Freidberg, who has been studying the politics of measuring food's "footprint," said those plastic flowers are likely manufactured overseas, using materials that have their own environmental costs.
And there was Freidberg weighing in on the environmental merits of buying plastic flowers: "Because they're so lightweight, they wouldn't have to be flown anywhere; they wouldn't decompose and create greenhouse gases in any landfill; there's the endless lifespan, so the possibilities for regifting them.
You also could go with daylilies, or even grasses, that are "very popular right now," Andrus said.
The bottom line for Mother's Day? "Do you want to give your mother something that's dead or alive?" Andrus asked.
In the end, she said, "We can spend an entire lot of time and mental energy worrying about the carbon footprint of this product versus that product, but oftentimes those differences may be trivial compared to the larger lifestyle.
To reduce your carbon footprint this Mother's Day, Dubner suggested, give plastic flowers rather than real ones, which often are flown here from "equatorial countries" and then trucked across the country, he said. "Now we've got something which will not break down for many, many years," he said.
Freidberg said figuring out the environmental costs of any individual product is complicated.
He's not buying the fake flowers argument either; those are made overseas, so there's a big carbon footprint in getting them here, Demers said.
When you go to your local garden center to buy Mother's Day plants and flowers, Demers said, "You're going to get a lot of homegrown material, and you'll be supporting New Hampshire agriculture.
And when the flowers are gone, he said, the plants and soil can be composted and the pots can be recycled.
"They do what plants do: They take the bad stuff out of the air and replace it with oxygen.
Andrus contends there are psychological benefits to choosing real plants as well: "Seeing something grow, and nurturing something, taking care of something.
Robert Demers of Demers Garden Center in Manchester suggests a nice hanging basket of flowers for Mom.
There are smaller growers here who raise kinds of cut flowers, such as carnations and snapdragons, he said.
Among his suggestions for Mother's Day gifts: the hydrangeas, roses and lilacs you can find at garden centers across the state.
But Freidberg tells the New Hampshire Sunday News that they left out what she said right after that: "I would never want to get plastic flowers. |
Mother's Day offers opportunities to get airline miles
Mother's Day offers opportunities to get airline miles Mother's Day, on May 13, is one of those gift-giving occasions where people can end up spending more than they may like on things they rarely buy, such as delivered flowers, mail-order fruit or fancy soap. Those sorts of purchases are sometimes tied to frequent flier promotions, which you can find on airlines' websites. Postal Service. Postage is expensive, however, you can save a few dollars by sending a book at the Media Mail rate through the U. If you're ordering flowers, you might save a little money or get more quality assurance by tracking down a local florist in the town where Mom lives. The thing that can make Mother's Day tricky, and also Father's Day on June 17, is that mothers and fathers are less likely these days to live down the street or across town, and more likely to live out of state. Many airlines also have shopping hubs in the frequent flier section of their websites that allow you to get frequent flier miles at many retailers. For example, if you wanted to buy a Nook e-reader from Barnes ine, are bursting with Mother's Day offers for things such as mail-order chocolate-dipped strawberries, flowers from nationwide merchants, spa gift certificates and so on. With airlines that allow frequent flier miles to expire after certain periods of time without account activity, such as US Airways and Southwest, a small purchase from one of their partners will reset the expiration date on your account and add more miles. These programs, which don't cost anything to join, typically link your frequent flier number to a credit card or debit card, and when you use that card to buy a meal at a restaurant in that program, you get frequent flier miles. Looking ahead, Father's Day is just over a month away. The miles are awarded automatically, with no coupons or certificates needed. But this column is about saving money, and there are always a few tricks that will be able to help you get the most from your money. For example, United Airlines will give you 30 award miles for every dollar spent on flowers from FTD, so if you spend $40 on flowers, you get 1,200 miles. Likewise, if you're taking Mom out to dinner, there's a chance the restaurant participates in your favorite airline's frequent flier dining program. So, someone who signs up for Skymiles Dining as a whole new member, then spends $100 at a participating restaurant, would add 1,500 miles to their account. |

Florists shut up shop but the Big Fella will still get his blooms
FOR the past 12 years, sisters Mary and Terry Hewitt have arranged monthly floral bouquets for the grave of Michael Collins in Glasnevin Cemetery. The monthly bouquet comes from a French admirer of the assassinated IRA leader. "It's been a business that's been very good to us over the years. Our customers have always been very good to us. "We received a lot of thank-you notes and we've kept many of them. She took the trouble to ask us to look after the flowers for the grave for so long and we owe it to her to continue what she does," said Mary, who learned her trade at well-known florists, Marie James on Dublin's Dawson Street. "She struck a chord with us. The sisters have made many loyal customers over the years. But it is Veronique Crombe -- a lecturer and guide at the French National Museum who orders the monthly arrangements from Paris -- who will remain their sole customer. It gave me a real buzz working alongside flowers and to see the power they are able to have in so many different situations and the meanings behind them. Dear Mom ... this is for you
Mother's Day is just around the corner and this year let's give Mom a fabulous gift designed just for her. Even if the planter is the typical ceramic, resin or metal variety, increase the design bar by embellishing the front with a vintage brass doorknocker, a painted wood molding detail or even a wall sconce that can hold a candle. Now for the plants: Plant trailing bamboo, banana palms or another fabulous tropical and fill with colour-coordinating flowers and fabulous textured leaves. Everyone in the family is going to want a copy, so be certain to print more than one. Moms are notorious for not pampering themselves, so plan a spa day for Mom and a friend or Mom and you. Splurge and also hire a professional stylist, like Sam, to consult on a new look, give makeup tips (of course you'll want to treat Mom to all the new products she'll now need) and possibly even a whole new outfit. I gave my Mom an iPad at Christmas and she's addicted. I knew she would love it, I just didn't realize how much. Register yourself and Mom in an art class, a wine tasting or a cake-decorating class. My Mom loves it when I give her custom-designed front door planters. This is a great book that shares stories of 20 inspirational women: Estee Lauder, Mata Amritanandamayi and Ella Fitzgerald, just to name a few. A great book with a beautifully handwritten inscription from you, telling her how much she has inspired you, is truly priceless. Of course, we start with great planters. What a great evening and this can even include a cooking lesson. Give Mom a beautiful picnic basket, complete with lunch for four, and have a great day enjoying a favourite local park. Moms are busy people, so treat her to a day with a professional organizer. Cleaners once a week for the month of May is also a great gift that can help Mom have more time for her. |

Mother's Day: Bouquet Buyers Beware
Mother's Day: Bouquet Buyers Beware
When you order Mother's Day flowers online, what you see isn't always what Mom gets. Most sites offer the disclaimer that arriving bouquets need immediate watering and a few hours to look their best.
Our first impression out of the box was, where's the rest of it? The 10-stem arrangement filled the vase in site photos, but looked noticeably sparse in person -- and more so as we opened other florist site boxes. As is, though, we think Mom would be mad we spent so much for so little. "We make every effort to deliver each arrangement as shown on the FTD. com Website," says FTD president Robert Apatoff. He says customers who aren't satisfied are encouraged to reach out "so that we can do our best to make things right. The polka-dotted vase -- though nicer than the plain one we'd picked -- arrived cracked. The underlying question: If this showed up at her doorstep, would she be impressed? . " The site provides a 100% satisfaction guarantee, and consumers unhappy with the quality of their offer might receive a refund or replacement, she says. It was nice to see a pop of color after two greener arrangements, but then we took a closer look. It's never too early to begin talking dollars. The tulips seemed smaller and less vibrantly colored than in the photo, too. The site describes the arrangement as "shipped fresh, budding and ready to bloom. " A day later, though, and no new flowers have opened. We're very proud of the freshness and cut stage of the product," he says, noting that new flowers should continue to open for two weeks. By the next morning, nearly a dozen of the lilies were open. com, says the flowers arrive in bud form to allow the customer to enjoy the bouquet for a longer amount of time. But we saw potential. The site promises "at least 20 blooms" on eight stems of white and pink lilies, and we counted at least twice that number of buds in the vase-filling arrangement. And it was already more fragrant than the other bouquets. Ella Orsatti, the general manager for Kabloom, says the substitution was likely the result of a quality issue with the roses, and in those cases the policy is to add extra (and more expensive) blooms rather than greenery. It's a good thing we went for a cheaper clear vase rather than the "garden green glass" version we initially saw pictured. Damaged or late shipments may be eligible for store credit or a replacement. Florists also tend to have signature touches and looks, she says, which may lead to a bouquet that differs from the standard stock photo. The most colorful and freshest of the bunch, Kabloom's bouquet was the only one to arrive with the stems in water. But the flowers weren't precisely what we ordered: the yellow spray roses had been replaced with yellow daisies and green dahlias, which gave it the appearance of a less-expensive bodega bouquet. Problems blooms typically result in a free replacement. With most couples waiting to marry and three quarters of marriage partners living together first, many celebrants are paying at least part of their wedding bill. Cuba's New Mantra: Viva Private Business
Cuba's New Mantra: Viva Private Business
Two self-employed florists prepare bunches of flowers in Havana last year. Chavez offers the island with two-thirds of its oil on favorable terms, as well as more than $5 billion a year in exchange for the Cuban doctors and other professionals working in Venezuela. The new approach was evident in this year's May Day parade in Havana, which was a little different from the Soviet-style processions of the past. Between the drumming and the dancing girls writhing around on floats in tightfitting tops, it was hard to hear Cuban officials exhorting workers to greater efficiency and more discipline. Despite Changes, More Openness Needed Still, the possibility is putting pressure on Raul Castro to broaden the reforms. Now, with Chavez so ill he has prayed on national television for Jesus to spare his life, Cuban economist Pavel Vidal says it's clear the economic reforms must move faster. A Havana car wash is one example of Cuban entrepreneurs learning to diversify beyond selling snacks or renting rooms to tourists. Hildelisa Cespedes says her family is waiting to see if local officials will let them rent out a rundown garage around the corner that is owned by the state, the sort of arrangement Cuban authorities say they're still studying. Venezuelan Lifeline In Jeopardy? As Cubans marched and chanted "Long live the revolution," the island's biggest financial backer, Venezuela's Chavez, was in a Havana hospital for another round of cancer treatments. "If we had a bigger place, we may have more customers and hire more workers," Cespedes says. The state workers, duty-bound to attend the parade, were making the most of it, even if there wasn't a lot to celebrate. Vidal and others say the damage to Cuba's economy wouldn't be as severe as the sudden demise of the Soviet Union a generation ago. But that is changing fast. Cuba's uncertain economic outlook may find a brand new lifeline even if Venezuelan support dries up. "This is a whole new way to create jobs for our country," said Enciso, who runs a snack bar, a clothing shop and another business selling religious items. Still, there was a growing contingent of new Cuban workers on the march this year: self-employed entrepreneurs and private business owners like Lazaro Enciso. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (right) speaks with his Cuban counterpart, Raul Castro, during a military parade earlier this year in Caracas, Venezuela. "Cuba's economy is small, and from a political-economic standpoint, it's closed, with a high degree of dependency on access to hard currency for growth," says Vidal. Those plans signal a new urgency to Cuban President Raul Castro's economic reforms, and one reason is that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the island's biggest benefactor, is battling cancer and facing re-election in October. |
